Ukrainian military drones suffered short connection drops while operating at speeds of just 110-120 km/h. The interruptions, lasting 10 to 20 seconds, made the drones significantly harder to control. This stemmed from speed caps applied to Starlink terminals in motion.
Former defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov later confirmed that connectivity had been restored at speeds up to 160 km/h. However, he called for all remaining limits to be removed. Presidential adviser Serhii Beskrestnov stated that the was no coincidence. He linked it to the current political situation, referring specifically to Trump's decision to lift sanctions on Russian oil purchases.
Elon Musk pushed back on responsibility for the He that SpaceX played no role and that any speed caps must have been imposed by American military authorities and President Trump. Starlink serves about 13 million subscribers as a commercial network, while Starshield is the military version controlled by the US government.
Ukraine has relied on Starlink since early in the Russian invasion for battlefield communications, long-range drone strikes, and radio control that electronic jamming. No European country currently offers a Starlink equivalent, though Zelenskyy said in August that Kyiv was exploring an alternative system built jointly with a European partner.
